About Rigid Heddle Loom

Previous Entry Rigid Heddle Loom Oct. 2nd, 2006 @ 11:12 pm Next Entry
A cousin of mine found this loom at a yard sale. It's a rigid heddle loom, I think it came from Canadian Living Magazine, and it's called a Ram Loom or Ram's Loom. Does anyone out there have one? Or have the instrucitons on how to put it together? I'll puzzle it out eventually, but man, it would be easier with instructions... I'm not even sure I have all the pieces! I googled it, but only found one entry of a woman who also bought one at a garage sale and thinks she is missing some pieces.

It's a different brand of loom but it should give you a head start. I just googled "rigid heddle loom assembly" and this is the first hit.

Thanks! I found that page, and it is fairly similar to what I've got in my livingroom.

I hope it works for you. There were several other links to loom assembly so if this one doesn't work, try using the google terms I listed above for more :-)

Do you have a photo of the pieces you have, or a list?

Look for:

a back beam (that the warp is wound around);
two side beams, likely with blocks on the inside midway that the rigid heddle can sit on in an 'up' shed mode;
a front beam, that the finished weaving is wound around.
at least one rigid heddle (check the number of slots/holes per inch; this will be handy as you begin to use it);

Hardware to attach the side beams to the rotating front and back beams. Usually those are held in place keeping the warp in tension by the sides being tightened in.

Perhaps some:
shuttles, pickup sticks, and a sleying hook (or even a crochet hook) to pull the warp threads through the rigid heddle

With a photo, I'd be glad to point to different pieces and help you figure out putting it together. Congratulations on your loom!

I have just dug out the very same loom from my basement! I bought it many years ago (through Canadian Living) but never used it. I have all the parts, including the instructions. If you still need them, I could scan them and email them to you. Let me know.

I have been wanting to learn how to weave and I just bought a Ram Loom at a white elephant sale. It came with partial instructions on how to put it together but nothing on how to use it. I managed to put it together but I am missing the heddle support blocks that sits on the sides. If you have those pieces, can you let me know the dimensions so that I can try to have them made?

I emailed Canadian Living and Ram Wool but they were not able to help. If you still have the instructions, I would really appreciate it if you can scan and email them to me.

Have you used your Ram Loom and do you like it? It looks similar to a rigid heddle loom but this heddle looks very different for the ones I have seen on-line?

I've never used this loom but I think I have all the pieces. Yes, I agree that the heddle seems quite different - it doesn't have a plastic "eye" through which to thread the warp. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced the instructions now (ugh). I will search for them and let you know.

I'm not sure if this will help or not,but you might get in touch with (Jane Patrick) and she probably can help you. I found her on the web when I was looking for a loom. The sight was on You Tube - Weaving on a ridged loom with Jane Patrick. Hope this will help!

I have the instructions on how to put it together but I have pieces missing and therefore am having a heck of a time getting someone to make the pieces. Maybe between the two of us we can get results. You can email me @ jdmctsen@escape.ca if your interested.
