Hi there!

I do card weaving, but I have never tried weaving with a loom before - until I picked up a lovely 24" rigid heddle tabletop loom at a garage sale for $5 this afternoon (the lady didn't seem to really understand why I was so excited to buy her neighbor's old loom :D )

So while I've got a good grasp on *how* to weave on my new loom, and I have good instructions on how to warp it, etc., I really have no idea what I can do with it! Card weaving, I understand the limitations of design and the way the threading, weaving, etc results in a particular end product, but I don't have the slightest idea what my new baby is capable of.

It had the remains of an abandoned project still on it when I bought it, so I got to play around a bit, but it was just cream perle cotton warp and cream yarn weft, so it didn't give me any insight into what it can do in terms of patterns, designs, etc.

I'm going to re-warp it tonite just to try it, but I'm terribly curious about what kind of projects I can put on it, so if anyone can recommend a book, a website, personal experience, etc, that would be wonderful!

From Interweave Press, Hands On Rigid Heddle Weaving by Betty Lynn Davenport. It's a good introduction to what you can do. I don't know if it is currently in print, but if not, your library should be able to borrow it from somewhere for you.

The rigid heddle can be used to do some fairly elaborate stuff, but is limited by the fact that it has only two sheds and one sett (the number of warp threads per inch is fixed.) You can do elaborate pickup patterns with a shed stick or two, or various hand tied or transparency techniques like rya or Moorman techniques. On the whole, it isn't a bad introduction to weaving though. You can certainly make nice scarves, place mats and other simple flat work with it, and it will do some of the basic color and weave tricks, like log cabin weave.

Hey, it doesn't get much use, but I wanted to make sure you knew about card_weavers!
